Unique in the field, ARA allows authors to retain full rights over their works, to retain final say in the final form of their manuscript, to set their own market/retail cost for their book, to order a generous number of author copies with no mark-up beyond the printing-shipping cost, and to enjoy a substantially high percentage of royalty earnings from their work. ARA publications are produced using the latest, professional-level on-demand print technologies. Professional-quality, high-volume hardcopy press runs can also be arranged. Books are be produced in soft and hardcover and, upon request, e-book formats, all capable of incorporating high-quality photos, images, charts, graphs, tables, etc. Smaller-size booklets can also be facilitated. (In standard, full 8.5 x 11 or A4 page format, minimum page-count is approximately 30, maximum approximately 380, ultimately producing booklets at a minimum of 50 p and full-size books at a maximum of 760 p).
Currently ARA has two publications on the market: R. Charles Weller, Rethinking Kazakh and Central Asian Nationhood: A Challenge to Prevailing Western Views and an English translation of Garifolla Yesim, a top Kazakh national scholar at Kazakh National University in Almaty, entitled An Insider's Critique of the Kazakh People and Nation: Reflections on the Writings of Abai Kunanbai-uhli (to view these works, click on the "Central Asia" tab at the top or bottom of this page). Other works are in the pipeline, including discussions with the Royal Asiatic Society in England regarding the possibility of reprinting H.A.R. Gibb's classic study of A History of Islam in Central Asia.
ARA's sister entity, Central Asian Historical-Cultural Research Center in Almaty, Kazakhstan, also engages in publishing (primarily in Kazakh), including a 2004 Kazakh-translation of Faiths of Turkistan (original Russian title, Vera v Turkestane) by Dr. Anara Tabishalieva, a top Kirgiz scholar who served as an editor with UNESCO on their History of Civilizaitons of Central Asia project, and a publication by CAHCRC staff on The National Culture of the Kazakh People. CAHCRC's latest project includes the first-ever Kazakh translation of select portions of Herodotus, The Histories, treating the peoples and countries of pre-Islamic Central Asia.
ARA's venue extends well beyond the Kazakh and Central Asian world, however, to include West Asian (aka Near-Middle Eastern) and (North) East Asian studies as well as related Russian, Islamic and Buddhist or related African, Euro-American and world-global studies). ARA invites scholars engaged in these fields of research to submit their manuscripts and/or proposals for publication through ARA. Proposals should be made in one of the following two forms: 1- the complete draft manuscript (preferably in PDF, but WORD or WordPerfect also acceptable; all rights of the author(s) will be entirely respected and safeguarded by ARA); 2- an initial tentative title along with a tentative outline of proposed (sections &) chapters, including contributors names where appropriate, a 500-1000 word (i.e. 1-2 page) abstract summarizing the proposed publication, and a projected timeframe for completion and submission of the draft manuscript. All proposals, regardless of form, should include a statement identifying the specific intended audience of the work, its purpose and goal(s) and the perceived need on the public market which the book(let) aims to meet. Proposals should be submitted to: pubproposal@ara-cahcrc.com
